1. Crossing Legs Causes Spider Veins.

Fact!  Crossing your legs for long periods of time puts pressure on your veins in your legs.  This pressure sometimes causes spider veins.  Other things to look out for are standing for long periods, especially when your pregnant. 

Solution: A good way to prevent veiny legs are support hose, if you have to be on your feet for a long time.  If your already veiny try sclerotherapy and laser vain removal.

2. You Can Get Rid Of Cellulite

Myth! Sorry girls technology hasn’t caught up to that yet. “This remains one of the holy grails of cosmetic dermatology,” says Timothy Flynn, a clinical professor of dermatology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Nothing can be done to permanently eliminate it―not even liposuction. It doesn’t matter whether you’re fat or skinny. The only thing that you can do is temporarily reduce its orange peel look. Solution: Products that contain caffeine tighten and smooth the skin. Or try using a self-tanner to help camouflage it.

3. Shaving Will Make Your Hair Grow Back Darker And Thicker

Myth!  Appearances can be deceiving. When you shave, you are only cutting hair at the base.  So it really does not affect what is happening in the dermis.  The reason it appears to be thicker, is because the hair follicle is widest at the base and narrow at the tip. Since you just shaved off the tip, the next stage of hair growth would be the base, being wider, appearing thicker and darker.

Solution:  Instead of shaving wax.  Wax pulls the hair follicle from the root, which will leave you feeling smoother longer.  And you don’t have to worry about a shadow creeping up the next day.  That smooth feel last only 24-48 hours, if you shave.

4. Applying Vaseline On Your Face Nightly Will Prevent Wrinkles

Myth! Thank Marilyn Monroe for this one, who shmeared vaseline all over her face to stay looking young.  petroleum jelly is the strongest moisturizer there is because it forces oils into the skin and prevents them from evaporating, by adding moisture to the skin.  Sounds alright, but grease from the vaseline can actually cause worse problems for your skin, such as acne, which is much harder to control than aging skin.

Solution:  Try moisturizers or serums with proven anti-aging ingredients.

5.  Wearing Nail Polish All The Time Will Turn Your Nails Yellow

Fact!  Nails are porous, and they absorb the pigment in polishes. The darker the color, the better the chance your nails will stain. Solution: Before applying polish, paint on a clear base coat, such as Essie First Base Coat ($8, essieshop.com), to prevent nails from absorbing pigment.

 

6. You Can Minimize Your Pores

Myth: Theres nothing you can do change the size of your pores.  There are plenty of products out there that minimize the appearance of pores but dont actually change their size.                                                                                                                                                                    7. If You Use Wax To Remove Hair, Fewer Hairs Will Grow Back

Fact!  You’ll just have to wait about 20 years to reap the rewards for your efforts.  When you wax, you’re ripping the hair out of the follicle.  Any repeated injury to the follicle, will eventually diminish some follicles to the point that they don’t grow back but you are gonna have to wait awhile.

8. Preperation H Diminishes Puffiness

Fact!  This is a secret of makeup artists everywhere, and there’s a lot of anecdotal evidence to suggest that this hemorrhoidal cream can reduce undereye baggage, but no clinical studies have been done.  But, using Preparation H around the eyes can cause dry and inflamed skin. Thank goodness we’ve come along way from kitchen experiments and there are products formulated specifically for eye puffiness, without taking a risk.  Good rule of thumb, product meant for down there should not go on your face!

9. Applying Oils And Creams Can Diminish Stretch Marks

Myth!  Sorry but  you can sit in a tub of cream and olive oil everyday for the rest of your life but it’s not gonna  do a darn thing to get rid of your stretch marks.  Stretch marks are caused by the skin expanding, which break down the collagen and elastin fibers.  Stretch marks are formed in the dermis, that is below the epidermis, which is as far as those anti stretch mark product will ever go.

10.  If I Have Dark Skin I Can’t Get Sunburned

Myth!  This is the worst thing someone in the skin care industry can hear from a client and the scary thing is we hear it often.  Whether you’re a blue-eyed, freckled-faced red-head or african descent, you can all get sunburned.  Most people of darker skin complexions think, they do not need any type of SPF or sun protection but everyone does.  The sun’s harmful UVA/UVB rays do not distinguish people by color.  When darker people get sunburned, they may suffer from hypopigmentation, the skin looses its pigment.  Safe to say we can all benefit by applying SPF 30 before we head out the door.
